Established by the Ministry of Women and Child Development in 2008, National Girl Child Day is observed annually on January 24th. Aligned with a broader gender sensitivity mission, the day emphasizes the essential need to nurture and support the girl child, focusing on issues such as gender-based discrimination, female infanticide, and neglect, with a significant emphasis on education.
DBDOC, along with the female volunteers from PWC, played a pivotal role during this event, guiding girls on navigating challenging situations. They underscored the significance of resilience, problem-solving, and seeking support while fostering a positive mindset and coping mechanisms. The volunteers shed light on the impact of social media, discussing advantages and highlighting potential drawbacks of cyberbullying, encouraging responsible social media use. Through interactive sessions, they shared strategies for personal growth, nurturing a sense of self-worth. Discussions covered education barriers, gender-based discrimination, and health concerns, aiming to create awareness and equip the girls with knowledge and skills to tackle these challenges, ultimately empowering them to contribute to positive societal change.
National Girl Child Day reflects India’s commitment to eliminating gender-based discrimination and stereotypes. It calls for ending harmful practices like child marriage, female feticide, and unequal resource distribution within families. The day signifies a societal shift towards valuing and empowering the girl child, aspiring to create an environment where every girl is valued, protected, and given the opportunity to thrive.
