Cervical cancer remains a significant health concern in India, affecting about 96,000 women annually and causing around 60,000 deaths each year. It is the second most common cancer among Indian women, especially in rural and underprivileged areas. On this International Day of Action for Women’s Health, DBDOC organized a comprehensive awareness program to address cervical cancer, health, hygiene, and mental health, aiming to empower women from slum areas with essential knowledge and resources.
The program focused on cervical cancer awareness, including symptom recognition, early detection, screenings, vaccinations, and available treatments. It also emphasized personal hygiene, offered practical tips for cleanliness in challenging environments, highlighted the role of nutrition in health, and provided insights into mental health issues. Stress management techniques and information on accessing mental health resources and support groups were shared. Women were urged to participate in local medical camps for cervical cancer screenings to stay informed about early detection and preventive measures right from the start.
Participants responded enthusiastically, feeling more informed and empowered to maintain their health. Inspired by the event’s success, plans include follow-up sessions, regular health check-ups, and further training programs focused on health and hygiene, enabling women to become health ambassadors within their communities.
